CASE STUDY / THE GREEN ONE
A cosy colour washed room in deepest Somerset.
Cookswood is a beautiful private gated development. A place for homeowners and holidaymakers alike to relax, swim, cycle and eat/drink nestled in some of England’s most beautiful rolling hills.
We were asked to design and build a set of bunks to both enhance the appeal for AirBnB listings and to provide additional beds for this family getaway and part time holiday let.
We began by trying to keep the rather limited space as light and airy as possible with lots of open spaces and slatted walls instead of solid panels.
It soon became apparent, however, that we should go the other way and lean in to the cozy with a snuggly nook vibe instead.
Once settled on the cosy direction we took another look at the outer panels and wondered if just simple blocks of green paint would be interesting enough. We decided it wouldn't and proposed a CNC cut, scalloped carving might be a better way to go.
We cut a few test pieces using a large, dome head router bit and found a combination of spacings that looked great. And the customer agreed.
The internal radius was formed by kerf cutting a strip and fixing into recesses behind the fluting.
The concept and the proposed execution was approved and we got to work.
We were going for cozy and I think we nailed it.
Sleeping for 4 plus lots of storage provided by the under bed and under stairs drawers took care of the practicalities.
The sweeping, curved transition from top bunk to bottom and the striking scalloped fluting brought the flair.
A simple and clean look which we think worked out just right.
